From time to time, you're likely to come across certain words, phrases and acronyms that can be confusing to even the most experienced vaper. Two of these words are 'PG' and 'VG', or 'PG/VG ratio'. But what does it all mean? In this guide, we'll explore what PG and VG means, and why you should care.
What is PG and VG?
Understanding what PG and VG are and how they affect your vape can help you choose the most suitable e-liquid; most are marked with the ratio of PG and VG they contain. When available, this information is on the outside of the e-liquid box and in the accompanying leaflet – and you can also see it when you order Vuse e-liquids online.
Propylene glycol
Propylene glycol is an colourless, almost odourless liquid with a thin consistency that is used as a base for e-liquids along with vegetable glycerin (VG). It dissolves flavours and nicotine and enhance the e-liquid's taste, providing a more concentrated flavour. When vapourised, it produces a stronger throat hit and is less likely to cause build-up in vaping equipment.
Vegetable glycerin
Vegetable Glycerin (VG) is a sweet, odourless, thick liquid that is derived from vegetable oils. While VG has a higher viscosity than Propylene Glycol (PG), which can result in bigger vapour clouds, its thick consistency can take a toll vaping equipment, resulting in more frequent cleaning and maintenance.
PG/VG Ratios
The ratio of Propylene Glycol (PG) to Vegetable Glycerin (VG) in e-liquids affects the balance between flavour intensity, throat hit, and vapour production. Here are some of the most common ratios:
PG/VG Ratio | Summary |
70/30 | Users who prefer flavour concentration and throat hit. Heavy/ex-smokers |
50/50 | Balanced option between flavour and vapour. Suitable for most devices |
30/70 | Larger clouds, smoother throat hit. Requires compatible device |
20/80 | Maximum vapour production. Best with sub-ohm tanks |
Maximum VG | Suitable for those with PG sensitivity or seeking largest clouds. Requirs suitable device |
What PG VG Ratio Is Best?
The most common ratio found in e-liquids, including Vuse e-liquids, is 50/50 as it is widely believed to offer a well-rounded mix of flavour and vapour production that is suitable for most devices, including user-friendly devices such as the Vuse Pro. E-liquids with more VG, such as 30/70 or 20/80 blends, are more suitable for high-powered devices with advanced features such as sub-ohm kits and box mods.
